“In 1982, my husband and I both had freshly minted fine art degrees and were searching for a place to settle. We were from Minneapolis and visited far and wide. Immediately upon visiting Easthampton and One Cottage Street, we envisioned a community of artists filling this huge building. Our lives have been built around One Cottage Street and the artists who did come, one by one, to build this amazing group of creative people. One of the most attractive features of the building for artists is the abundance of natural light offered through its soaring windows. These windows provided light for the factory workers in an era before electric lights, and they now provide ideal conditions for artists’ studios. Today, 30 years after that initial visit, my husband, Mike MacTavish, paints landscapes full time at One Cottage Street and I, after many years of pottery making, now direct the art program at Riverside.”
