Riverside’s Life Skills Development Center provides people with opportunities for personal growth, independence, and quality living. Comprehensive goals and objectives combine traditional clinical and nursing services with alternative therapies and community activities. With these supports people are encouraged to reflect upon their life dreams so that they may be realized. Life Skills participants determine their individual plans with the help of those people closest to them, including their family members, friends, and advocates.

A talented team of professionals assists in the design of each person’s therapeutic plan. Evaluation, direct services, and consultations are provided to each participant. Clinical Services

Comprehensive clinical consultations are provided by specialists including Occupational, Physical, Speech/language and Behavioral Therapists. These clinicians help promote skills that lead to healthier, more independent quality living. Being able to move about easily and safely, communicate with your friends, and dress and groom yourself independently are some of the benefits. The ability to perform complex and simple activities is integral to everyone’s quality of life. Developmental skills are abilities that most of us take for granted such as: using the telephone, taking the bus, making decisions, grocery shopping, or cooking a meal.

Exercising control over what’s important to you and being able to express yourself are simple joys that enrich and provide greater daily independence. Some examples of services which promote people’s personal growth, dignity, and self-respect are:

Nursing Services

Nursing Services are available on site throughout the week in order to promote the health and well-being of the people who attend the Life Skills Development Center. The Health-Care Supervisor (Registered Nurse) is responsible for directing the health-care services that people receive. A Licensed Practical Nurse supports the safe and effective implementation of services. The Nursing team:

  • Monitors the health and medical status of each individual
  • Coordinates the medical services received at Riverside with the participants’ primary care physician, other health-care providers, human service professionals, and family members
  • Provides medical case management
  • Offers health-care training to staff members, such as Infection Control, CPR, and First Aid
  • Advocates and makes recommendations for referrals to needed services
  • Educates participants and staff members about ways to support people’s health, hygiene, nutrition, weight control
  • Provides medical interventions such as respiratory care, medication administration, and eteral feedings

Alternative Therapies

Life Skills Development Center uses alternative therapies not only for the health benefits of these activities, but also for the achievement of its more traditional clinical goals and objectives. Alternative therapies offer different mediums by which to explore and experience the environments that are both unique and stimulating. Community Membership/Volunteering

Community membership and integration are pivotal components of services to people with developmental disabilities. They evolve through a process of consistent participation in community activities in which the general population engages. Through volunteering participants make fruitful contributions to their communities as well as enhance those skills that lead to more independent and richer social lives.
