For thirteen years Riverside has operated a siteless Life Enrichment program serving a number of Hampshire County people, mostly seniors. The Life Enrichment program is woven of community activities with the main thread being community membership where an individual;s process of joining, belonging, and contributing to his/her community is fostered.

The Life Enrichment program encourages an individual's membership to evolve through a process of consistent participation. One needs to have the opportunity to join community events, to regularly attend activities and to participate in them in order to be a member. Through volunteering to regularly attending local functions, connections with people and interests in activities are cultivated so that important relationships based on commonalities, interests and personal identities are established.

Quality of Life Supports
Quality of Life supports are varied and different for each individual. Depending upon if someone is living alone, in a nursing home, or in a situation with staff supervision, supports are given in the following areas:

  • personal
  • legal
  • housing
  • medical
  • social
  • problem solving
  • financial
  • spiritual
  • communication

Developmental Skills
Therapeutic services are available for all participants in the Life Enrichment program and include:

  • problem solving
  • perceptual/fine motor activities
  • activities of daily living
  • cognition development
  • communication skills
  • gross motor activities

Through a companion model participants learn socialization, communication and quality of life skills. Companions provide transportation and support in a variety of settings, and also teach what most of us take for granted: crossing the street, where to locate things in our community, purchasing a cup of coffee, finding the restroom in a store, and social etiquette. Most importantly, participants learn self-respect and what it is like to belong to their community.
